Yul Edochie, born 7 January 1982, hails from Anambra State, Nigeria and was raised by his parents, Mr & Mrs Pete Edochie in Lagos State and Enugu State. He is the last of 6 children. He got married at the age of 22. He is currently 41 years old.

Yul Edochie’s father, Pete Edochie (born 7 March 1947) is considered by many as the King of African proverbs, especially for his distinctive roles in movies. He is also known to play a lot of roles as a king and he is currently 75 years old. His mother’s name is Josephine Edochie. Not much is known about Yul’s mother, as she prefers to stay away from the spotlight.

The last of five siblings, Yul Edochie is commonly considered as one of Africa’s most gifted actors, having received an Africa Magic Industry Merit Award and an Africa Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. Education

Yul Edochie attended Lillian’s Day Nursery School and Robinson Street Primary School in Enugu State, Nigeria. After his Common Entrance examination, he enrolled for his secondary education in four different schools, all located in Enugu State.

He later attended Marist Brothers’ Juniorate, Uturu University Secondary School, Ecumenical Community Secondary School, and New Haven Boys Secondary School. After completing his secondary education, Yul got admitted into the University of Port Harcourt, where he bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts.

Career

With the help of his father, Pete Edochie, who is a legendary actor in Nollywood, Yul grew up nurtured with a love for art and all things related to it. He started his acting career in 2005, where he appeared in his first movie titled ‘The Enquires’. He acted alongside other big names in Nollywood, including Chidi Mokeme, Enebeli Elebuwa, Clarion Chukwura, and Justus Esiri.

Yul rose to limelight in 2007 after featuring alongside Genevieve Nnaji and Desmond Elliot in the movie “Wind Of Glory”. The film was directed by Tchidi Chikere. Following the success of ‘Wind Of Glory’, the talented actor strived to establish a successful career in the industry, always struggling to grow out of his father’s shadows.

In 2015, Yul Edochie launched a film academy in Lagos State, where he groomed more professional actors that will produce good quality movies as he believed Nigeria had a dearth of actors exhibiting such prowess. He opened the academy as a result of the decline in quality and professionalism of upcoming Nigerian actors and actresses.

According to Yul, the academy is supposed to train the next generation of Nollywood actors and actresses. A duty that he intends to do personally. The academy also gives talented people the opportunity to be introduced to the Nigerian Film Industry.

Political Career

Apart from acting, Yul Edochie is also into politics. On July 14, 2017, he declared his intention to contest as a governor of Anambra State. The declaration came shortly after the “Not Too Young to Run” bill got passed by the then Bukola Saraki-led Nigerian Senate.

The declaration was made official on the 22nd of August 2017, when he picked up the nomination form of the political party “Democratic People’s Congress” and was eventually the flag bearer and gubernatorial candidate of the party to run for governor of Anambra State. However, he lost in the general election.

Later, on July 6, 2018, Yul was appointed by Gov. Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra State, as Senior Special Adviser on creative and entertainment media. In 2022, he also declared his intention to contest for the Nigerian presidency come 2023 on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). Unfortunately, he lost the party’s presidential ticket.
